Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) are potentially carcinogenic and therefore undesirable in food. However, there are no legal limits for PA in food, only recommendations by BfR and EFSA. According to these recommendations, the levels in food should be kept as low as possible. Herbal teas and teas and honey have been identified as main pyrrolizidine alkaloid sources. Recent studies also show that food supplements, especially ones produced directly from plants containing PA, may also pose a risk.
The content of PA in plant products should therefore be checked and minimized when possible.
The Tentamus Laboratory QSI in Bremen has been offering the analysis of pyrrolizidine alkaloids for a variety of foods since 2008.
